The first day of winter arrived quietly, but with the unmistakable coldness and wetness that Melbourne typically experiences at this time of year. I woke up to the gentle patter of rain against the roof, steady and unrelenting, as if winter had been waiting patiently for its cue to make its presence felt. The air carried a sharp, penetrating chill that seeped into everything around, wrapping itself around the house and settling deep into my bones. Stepping outside, the cold felt even more intense than I remembered, the sort that causes a pause, a brief moment of hesitation, before I can carry on with my day.

The heavy clouds that blurred the line between morning and afternoon cast a shadow over the day. The familiar paths I walk each day looked different, damp, glistening, and somehow more subdued. Even the dogs seemed slower, their usual energy tempered by the cold and wet underfoot, moving with gentle caution. There’s something about this first true winter’s day that invites quiet reflection, prompting me to pause and consider. The warmth of earlier months now feels distant, replaced by a quieter, more inward rhythm that beckons a slower pace. It’s a time for lingering mornings, warm drinks by a crackling fire, and the comforting certainty of routine. While the cold and rain may not be welcomed by everyone, they serve as a reminder that seasons change, and with them, I change too, settling in, adjusting, and seeking comfort wherever I can find it, in the simple moments.
