What dogs think

I have two beautiful dogs, and sometimes, when they sit quietly and gaze at me, I wonder what is going on in their minds. What are they thinking about? Is it food, their next walk, a favourite game, or simply the people they love and the world around them? Dogs are incredibly aware of their surroundings. Their senses are constantly working, taking in sights, sounds and, perhaps most importantly, smells that we barely notice. At any given moment, their minds are processing an enormous amount of information. They can also remember past experiences, learn from them and anticipate what might happen next. Anyone who has picked up a dog lead at the usual time knows just how good they are at recognising routines and predicting what comes next.

What fascinates me most is their emotional intelligence. Dogs seem remarkably good at reading our moods and responding to them. They know when we are happy and excited, but they also seem to recognise when we are tired, worried or simply need some quiet companionship. Dogs appear to learn, solve problems, adapt to unfamiliar situations and make decisions based on previous experiences. But perhaps their most remarkable quality is the relationship they form with us.

So when my two dogs sit there staring at me, I still wonder what they are thinking. Maybe it is something profound. Or, more likely, they are wondering when dinner will be served.
