What do you disagree with?

One of the most powerful sources of writing content is finding the ideas in the world you disagree with. There’s high likelihood you’ll find an audience who shares your disagreement. BUT, you need to be careful about standing against something vs standing FOR something. Marketing based on “picking a fight” with someone (or some stance) can help get you attention, but you don’t want to be simply known as someone who opposes others.
The goal isn’t to publicly disagree with someone. The point is to say: “I don’t think this advice works, esp for people who experience x. What I would propose is y.”
This way, the people who struggle with existing advice can find relief and an alternative in your writing.
A few examples of using disagreement as opportunity for writing content:
- Promoting analog solutions for productivity, when the general trend is going digital
- Regarding “positivity” as a negative trend, when you want to promote embracing both positive and negative emotions
- In my case: advocating for an approach to developing multiple habits at the same time, when the general advice in the habit-building world is to focus on building one at a time
What do you disagree with? How can you turn it into positive advice?
My first step when I encounter something I disagree with is to examine my own beliefs and where they come from instead of digging in and doubling down on them.
