Two learners, one journey

I’ve recently found myself in a role I didn’t expect when I first signed up for the L2P program. The L2P program is a community-based initiative that helps young people get their driver’s licence when they don’t have the usual support. What began as mentoring a young man learning to drive has grown into something broader. His mother, understandably nervous about being in the car with him, now joins us on our drives. As a result, I’ve realised I’m not just supporting him; I’m mentoring her as well.

There’s a quiet balance to it. While I guide him through the practical aspects of driving, including awareness, decision-making, and confidence, I’m also helping her feel more at ease in the passenger seat. I can see the tension in her ease gradually, kilometre by kilometre, as trust builds. It’s not just about road skills; it’s about reassurance, patience, and creating a calm environment for both of them. The goal is to get his mum comfortable with handing him the keys and letting him drive her without me around. This will be a far more practical way for him to build his 120 hours of driving before he gets his licence.
