Twitter Growing

I have noticed something about my Twitter account since I moved to schedule tweets to go out 4 times a day by clockwork. I am still getting new followers, but they are very, very low quality.

I do still get a few likes and retweets on my tweets, but generally it is only ever from the same 2 or 3 people. Despite the new followers, no-one is engaging with me - and that is because I am not engaging with them, or anybody for that matter.

But in one of my recent tweets I said this, which I believe is true:

Twitter is not a broadcast platform - it is an engagement platform.

You can only get so far by pushing your message. You need to give and engage to be able to receive.

Whilst I am not replying, commenting, retweeting and following others, my account is just on autopilot and my followers can see that. I also wonder if Twitter is reducing my “reach” too now that I am using a 3rd party app to post. It is certainly something I have read before, that they prefer you to use their app to post rather than rely on an API. Of course it has never been confirmed and I see plenty of accounts (albeit with a much bigger following than me) get lots of engagement on their (automated) tweets via 3rd party tools.

My goal isn’t to grow my account though. I just want to keep it ticking over. tld.rip allows me to research popular tweets on a theme and craft a weeks worth of content quickly and easily. It also retweets them for me too after 12 hours, so I the 8 AM and 8 PM people get to see the same content. Again, this also screams to Twitter that I am an automated account - but I don’t care.

I still believe that Twitter is the best social network out there. Facebook is full of mental relations I would rather not hear from or old school “friends” who I hardly knew. Reddit is fun, but also full of crazy content on any subject you could think of. I won’t even go into TikTok as I am too old for that anyway. Twitter just feels right to me: Quick and easy and you stand a better chance of reaching and actually talking with people than on any other platform.

Too old for TikTok?? Pish posh. You’re never too old to laugh. I get far more value from TikTok than from the Church of Twitter.

Well, I meant more that I wouldn’t want to use TikTok to create content.

Oh wow, awesome that you’re still on tldrip. I’m on it too but too much sunk costs on Typefully, and prefer the light mode and easy side bar. How long do you usually take to create a weeks worth of content? I’m also trying to optimize my workflow and set some smart constraints and timeboxes on twitter for 2022, so curious how others do it.

I can create a week’s worth in 20 minutes or so, just using the “Inspiration” part of tld.rip to load up some tweets on a certain subject for … inspiration! It helps me get in the zone for writing tweets and I can create them quite quickly, if they are all on a similar subject or focus.

Wow 20min! That’s super efficient. I spend 30-60min just writing my 2 tweets for the day. I should get back to using tldrip a bit… too sunk in on Typefully
