Townsville to Palm Cove

After the ferry carried us back to Breakwater Bay in Townsville, our Queensland adventure continued with a long drive north to Palm Cove, just north of Cairns. After collecting the rental car, we set off on the 380-kilometre journey with little expectation of what lay ahead. What followed was one of the most enjoyable drives I can recall.

The highway followed the tropical coast, revealing scenery that seemed to improve with every kilometre. To our left, the mountains rose dramatically from the landscape, their slopes cloaked in lush rainforest. In places, low cloud clung to the peaks, creating a picture-perfect backdrop that looked almost painted. To our right, the Coral Sea occasionally appeared between the trees, offering tantalising glimpses of blue water sparkling in the afternoon sun.

The countryside itself was magnificent. Vast stretches of sugarcane fields spread across the coastal plains, framed by rugged ranges and dense pockets of tropical vegetation. Small towns dotted the route, each with its own character and charm. The combination of mountains, farmland, rainforest and ocean created a constantly changing panorama that made the hours pass effortlessly.

By the time we arrived in Palm Cove, tired but content, we felt we had already experienced one of the holiday’s highlights. The drive showcased the extraordinary beauty of Far North Queensland and reminded us how spectacular Australia’s countryside can be.
