Time for sleep

I really should be asleep. I will inevitably wake early, and I have a four-hour drive to Wodonga ahead of me. Yet here I am, sitting up in bed long after I had planned to call it a day. Sometimes work spills beyond office hours, and today was one of those days. The day itself was busy enough, filled with meetings, emails and the endless list of tasks that seem to multiply whenever you make progress. By the time I looked at the clock this evening, I realised there were still a few loose ends to tie up. One of those was my daily writing.
There is something slightly frustrating about knowing that every extra minute awake robs tomorrow’s sleep. The late-evening quiet helps soothe the mind. The inbox has finally stopped filling, the phone is silent, and no interruptions are vying for attention, allowing a rare moment of calm. Soon enough, I will close the laptop and go to sleep. The road to Wodonga will still be there in the morning, and hopefully a strong coffee will make up for the sleep I sacrificed tonight. For now, though, I am determined to finish the day properly.
