The world's best baguette

There’s something quietly satisfying about finding one simple food that is consistently better than all the others. For me, it’s the sourdough baguette from Akimbo Bread in Northcote. I’m fortunate to live in an area overflowing with excellent bakeries and cafés. Another seems to be around every corner, and many produce beautiful, fresh bread and pastries, constantly raising the standard. I’ve tried baguettes from plenty of them, and to be fair, most are very good. But I keep coming back to Akimbo.

This morning, at the end of my weekly bike ride, I stopped in for my usual two baguettes. They were still hot from the oven, with a wonderful crisp crust and a soft, slightly chewy sourdough interior. At just $6 each, they’re among the best-value artisan breads around. There’s something particularly hard to resist about a still-warm baguette. I usually have to exercise considerable restraint not to tear off pieces before I even get home. I love good bread, and this one is my benchmark. I’ll happily keep trying the competition, but so far, nothing beats my favourite Aklimbo sourdough baguette. It truly is the world’s best baguette.
