The sun is my sauna

When I tell people in person that I'm doing a 30-day sauna challenge, the common reply is , "Just go outside." Indeed, with a high of 113 F today, one will start sweating within minutes of being in the sun. I sat out in direct sunlight at noon and lasted about ten minutes before it was time to head back inside.

One of the themes I noted at the Biohacking Conference this year was the complexity underlying simplicity. The advice to get sunlight exposure at sunrise seems very simple. Go outside and take a short walk. It doesn't seem like much is happening when, in fact, many complex processes are happening within the body.

In terms of timing, sunrise presents a light signal crucial for synchronizing the circadian rhythm. Look no further than shift workers and their host of health problems for going against this natural rhythm.

Another complex interaction occurs from the infrared light (perceived as heat) that falls on the skin and penetrates the body. The infrared energy creates something called exclusion zone water within and between our cells. This phenomenon has been coined the "fourth phase of water" by Dr. Gerald Pollack.

Speaking of infrared energy, it's time to hop into my far infrared sauna and complete session #19.
