Ratgdo

This week, I added a Ratgdo garage door controller to my growing collection of home automation gadgets. While it might appear as a simple circuit board at first glance, it addresses a problem that has long frustrated me and my smart home setup. Ratgdo was specifically designed to enable local control of garage door openers, especially Chamberlain and LiftMaster models that utilise the Security+ 2.0 protocol. This protocol had made it challenging for traditional smart relays and home automation systems to interface directly with the door opener, creating a significant inconvenience that the Ratgdo aims to resolve.
The name itself stands for “Rage Against The Garage Door Opener,” reflecting the creator’s frustration with closed systems, cloud dependencies, and limited third-party integrations. Instead of relying on proprietary cloud services, ratgdo provides me with local control through my Apple Home, ensuring more privacy and reliability. It also offers detailed status feedback from the door, giving me real-time updates. For someone like me, already invested in Apple Home and Homebridge, it feels like the perfect addition to my smart home setup. Rather than simply opening and closing the garage door, it becomes another fully integrated part of my intelligent, connected ecosystem, enhancing convenience and control in a seamless way.
