Packing well

Life’s a journey, they say. And to pack well, it’s not what you bring, but what you don’t bring.

Some things cannot go where we’re going.
Some things need to be dropped to make space for what’s coming.
Some things had served its purpose and makes no sense to bring along.

I think moving to a different country is as much what we’re not bringing along as what we’re moving towards. It’s easy to see the benefits, advantages, things we’re going there for. It’s harder to see what we’re leaving behind.

Relationships that no longer serve you.
People who take much, give little.
Poor role models and peer pressure.
The crazy stressful education rat race.
The lack of grace in the community.
Extreme impatience on the roads.
Work, work and more work.
Unhelpful narratives of self-worth.

Competition over compassion.
Consumption over contentment.
Commercialism over community.
Contention over connection.

I think what we leave behind will be the bigger shift.

More than ever.
