In a world that is becoming increasingly focused on electric SUVs and software subscriptions, some car manufacturers still prioritise the driving experience. Mazda has announced that the next-generation MX-5 roadster will maintain the lightweight design that has made the current model so iconic and will feature a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine. However, a recent patent application indicates that the company is also considering an electric future, potentially one that will continue to bear the MX-5 nameplate.

The patent includes illustrations of a compact, two-door sports car that resembles the current MX-5, but features an electric powertrain to preserve the car’s nimbleness. Mazda states that this configuration positions the centre of gravity closer to the vehicle’s midpoint, resulting in improved agility and balanced handling. Furthermore, the design may feature extra battery modules placed behind the seats and a smaller battery pack in front of the passenger.

Just as intriguing as the battery placement in Mazda’s upcoming electric sports car is the location of the motor. Rather than being between the rear wheels, the rear motor will be positioned in the centre tunnel, transmitting power to the rear through a differential. This layout centralises most of the weight. So, if the Mazda MX-5 evolves into an electric vehicle, it will continue prioritising its sporty handling and enjoyable dynamics.
