On Day 3, we are heading to Uji, a place famous for its matcha. We start by taking the train from Kyoto Station, and after a half-hour journey, we arrive in Uji. Our first stop is a well-known dessert shop nearby, Tsujirihei Honten. The desserts sold at this shop are quite premium, but they taste amazing; even my little girl couldn’t stop reaching for more.

After enjoying dessert, we walk in a different direction towards Uji Bridge. Along the path by the bridge, we can see cherry blossoms (sakura). My wife took tons of photos of our little girl here. After exploring Uji Bridge, we head to Byodo-in Omotesando, a shopping street lined with traditional shops selling various matcha products.

After some shopping, we decided to have dinner at Ramen Tanaka Kyu Shoten, a ramen shop on the street that features a unique twist on their ramen and gyoza by incorporating matcha.

After a full day of enjoying matcha, we return to the hotel.

Comments

The matcha appearing in everything reminded me of a recent trend happening in Dubai that has since expanded regionally (bot not as intensely as Dubai). It’s the incorporation of pistachio and an Arabic dessert called kanafa in chocolate. It started off as chocolate bars but now most dessert shops and restaurants have their own version of this combo (ice creams, cakes, smoothies, etc).
