Home alone and no responsibilities

With my wife away in India and the doggies staying at a friend’s house, coming home tonight felt very strange. All day, part of my mind had been running through the usual evening routine: get home, walk Louie and Otis, figure out dinner, feed the dogs, tidy up, and settle in for the night. Then I remembered that I had nothing to do. No dogs waiting impatiently for their walk. No dinner to organise. No one expecting me home. For once, the evening was entirely mine, with no responsibilities or timetable. It should have felt liberating. Instead, it felt oddly uncomfortable.

So much of my daily life revolves around those small responsibilities. Walking the dogs, cooking dinner, and spending the evening with Jane can sometimes feel like chores, but they also give my days rhythm and purpose. When they suddenly vanish, the silence they leave behind is surprisingly noticeable. Tonight reminded me that being free from responsibility is not necessarily the same as being happy. I could do absolutely anything I wanted, yet what stood out most was what was missing. Perhaps the routines I sometimes take for granted are actually what make home feel like home.
