Habits are overrated. Environment is king.

Habits are overrated. Willpower is overrated. Discipline is overrated.

Because who needs them when all you need to do to change is to change your environment?

I just ‘relocated’ to Chiangmai for three weeks, and already I feel like the stress and grind that I can never shake off while in Singapore, is dropping away piece by piece. My walking pace is slower. I’m less irritable. Little things that annoys me annoy me less now. I thought that was my skin, but seems like it was just another layer of clothing that I could disrobe when the external conditions are ripe.

It’s crazy how powerful the external environment determines your thoughts, feelings, emotions, actions, habitsm behaviours. More so that we are willing to accord it. Because that feels like giving away our agency, but in fact, it is not.

We can design our external environment.

Three ways we can change:

  • We can choose to change things and develop solutions.
  • We can choose to leave and go to a better place that suits us.
  • We can choose to accept it and seek peace through other means.

And the fastest and easiest way to change is the middle path - leave and go someplace else more worthy of your energy.

So before you get into habits and muster up willpower, ask if you can simply change the environment.

Usually, you can.

If you can’t change the world, at least change where you stand.

@Winkletter Well said! The folly of my youth was thinking I can change the world. Now I just change where I stand.
