Granny's got no excuses

We’re having another hot, muggy day. I wanted to hunker in my bunker, but I’ve had an image stuck in my head all day. This morning I was playing a walking tour video on my second screen, and I saw an old Japanese woman walking down some stone stairs on a wooded path. She was taking each step slowly–one foot, then the other. I only saw her for a brief peak, but all day I’ve been thinking, “Granny’s got no excuses.”

She could indulge in excuses. She’s old. She’s frail. She’s weak. She could fall and hurt herself. But instead she goes out into the world and stays active. She’s slow. She’s careful. She’s resilient. She’s still getting around on her feet. I want to be more like that granny when I get old.

So I went outside to cut down weeds and cleared the grass from my dad’s air conditioner. I was miserable. I was sweating. But I’m feeling good now sitting in front of the fan with some ice cream.
