Fractured

During a training walk for our Camino journey later in the year, my wife slipped on some mud and fell awkwardly, twisting her ankle. Although she could stand on it, she felt some discomfort, prompting our decision to walk back to the car, which was about two kilometres away. Once we returned home, her ankle swelled considerably, making it hard for her to bear weight on her left foot. She concluded it would be wise to have it examined.
We visited the nearby emergency care clinic, which was fortunately not too busy, allowing her to see a doctor in about 30 minutes. Upon examining her ankle, the doctor suspected it was likely broken. The doctor’s assessment was accurate; the X-ray revealed a small fracture in the fibula. Fortunately, it wasn’t a compound fracture, and while her ankle swelled, there was minimal bruising.
With just ten weeks left until our Camino walk, we might need to rethink whether we should proceed. Even if my wife’s fracture heals before our departure, she may discover her leg isn’t yet strong enough for the demands of a four-week, 500-kilometre hike. We’ll await the doctor’s advice after her follow-up tests on Wednesday. Meanwhile, we’re already exploring contingency plans.
