Forts Walk

One of the highlights of our holiday on Magnetic Island has been the famous Forts Walk. We set off late in the afternoon, hoping to catch the sunset from the forts. The track climbed steadily, revealing glimpses of sparkling blue water through the trees and offering breathtaking views across the bays below. As we walked, it was impossible not to reflect on the history hidden among the granite boulders. Perched high above the coastline, the remains of World War II fortifications stand, built to defend Townsville and the surrounding waters during a time of great uncertainty. The old gun emplacements, command posts and observation points stand as reminders of a very different era.

The scenery was truly spectacular, offering breathtaking views at every turn, but it was the wildlife that truly made the walk unforgettable. Several koalas slept peacefully in the branches overhead, one cradling a tiny baby koala, seemingly unconcerned by the visitors below and adding a sense of wonder to the experience. Reaching the summit felt like a well-earned reward for our efforts, providing a panoramic vista that was absolutely worth it. Standing among the ancient, weathered ruins, surrounded by the natural beauty of the landscape, I felt incredibly fortunate to experience one of Australia’s most remarkable walks.
