Day 19: Father's Day
isra.a.writes • 15 Jun 2025 •
Did some research, and apparently, Father’s Day required a series of marketing rounds over six and a half decades to be recognised as a national holiday in the U.S.
Mother’s Day as a national holiday: 1914
Father’s Day as a national holiday: 1972
In the Middle East, Mother’s and Father’s Day are not national holidays (celebrated sure, but you don’t get a day off). The same is true for most countries, including China, Japan, India and Russia, to name a few.
I think society would benefit from having a public holiday on these special days.
The negatives:
- It would understandably be a triggering holiday for many people and for many reasons
- Will definitely contribute to the over-commercialisation of these events and create socioeconomic rifts in participation
The positives:
- Good parents will get the honour they deserve instead of constantly being the subject of failure and blamed for childhood trauma
- Society would understand the value of parents
More reasons for either? I’m curious.

@Twizzle That’s a fair preference. But as an optimist and romantic, I enjoy celebrating ‘commercial holidays’. Life is too serious not to.
My parents never encouraged us to celebrate these sorts of days, something which I have tried to continue with my own children too. I feel it is a waste of money, buying gifts and cards for a made up event designed to sell more gifts and cards. I don’t think my dad was even aware it was fathers day yesterday either. He has opted out of such things for so long, he doesn’t even know when it rolls around each year.
