Consistency's real power

I think people often mistake consistency’s power. They think the consistency is the power. That you show up, every day. That you don’t give up. That you are disciplined.

But consistency’s real power isn’t all that, even if they help.

It’s not about a hero being so strong and powerful, nothing can stop him.
It’s about what happens when he does falter.

Consistency’s real power shows up on the lowest days when you are utterly spent, when you are weak, when you trip over yourself. All the days of being consistent led up to this moment. When you could no longer manage, when you can no longer go on, when you just. want. to. give. up.

That moment, the streak comes back and asks you, “Are you sure?” Are you sure, after all that you committed to? After all the effort and compounding?

The longer the streak, the stronger the question.

It also shows up when you break the streak, but bounced back the next day. Without second-guessing yourself. Without entertaining quitting. Without self-rationlising.

It’s what it does for you, at your lowest, poorest, slowest.
It’s what it does to you on days that’s hardest, not easiest.

That’s consistency’s real power.
