A simple gesture

Whenever I enter a shop and hear the familiar greeting, “How are you?”, I often wonder whether it’s meant sincerely or is simply part of the customer service routine. Shop assistants say it countless times a day, so it might be more politeness than genuine concern. Still, I’ve always valued the gesture. In a hectic world where many exchanges are quick and transactional, there’s comfort in being recognised as a person rather than just another customer. Whether routine or sincere, the question fosters a small moment of human connection.
That’s why I make a sincere effort to respond thoughtfully. Instead of giving a quick nod or a vague “good,” I meet their gaze and ask, “I’m good, how are you?” This often surprises them. Perhaps they’re used to customers passing by without stopping or replying without really engaging. Still, I believe that if someone takes the time to ask about me, I should reciprocate some courtesy. These brief moments may only last a few seconds, but they serve as a meaningful reminder that kindness and respect often manifest in small gestures. A genuine acknowledgment can genuinely brighten both our days and foster a little more connection in an otherwise busy world.
