A different Inbox

I often feel distressed when I glance at the number of emails in my wife’s Inbox. It is not just the total count that catches my attention, but the large number marked unread. To me, an Inbox full of unread messages feels overwhelming. I immediately wonder whether an important email has been missed, whether action is required, or whether something urgent is buried beneath a mountain of digital clutter. Over the years, I have developed my own approach to email management. I like knowing what has been read, what still needs attention, and what can be safely archived. A tidy Inbox gives me a sense of calm and control, allowing me to focus on what matters without the nagging feeling that something has slipped through the cracks.
Because of this, I often want to help my wife manage her Inbox. In my mind, a few simple changes could make things easier and less stressful. If she asked for my help, I am confident I could show her a system that would reduce clutter and make important messages easier to find. But I have learned that not everyone sees email the same way. What feels chaotic to me feels perfectly manageable to my wife. She is comfortable with her approach and doesn’t share my concern. As much as I want to help, I have come to realise that a well-managed Inbox is not a universal goal; it is a personal preference, and hers is simply different from mine.
