13 Tog

I’ve always appreciated the simple pleasure of slipping into a bed that starts out cold, knowing it will slowly warm around me. For years, my wife has suggested we get an electric blanket, but I can’t imagine anything less appealing than a bed that’s already heated. There’s something comforting about the contrast, the crispness of the sheets giving way to warmth as you settle in. It feels natural, almost earned. Climbing into a pre-warmed bed just doesn’t have the same charm.
We’ve struck a compromise over time. I head to bed first, warm her side, then shift across when she comes in. It works surprisingly well—a small routine that suits us both. With winter now upon us, the heavier duck down doona has made its return. Ours has a Tog rating of thirteen, almost as warm as you can get, and it’s perfect for these colder nights. The Tog rating, after all, measures how well a quilt traps heat relative to its weight, and this one does the job beautifully. In the end, I still think there’s no need for heat-producing blankets. Just the right doona, the right season, and that gentle, gradual warmth are more than enough.
