This month, Coldplay released its 10th studio album, Moon Music. In an interview, lead singer Chris Martin explained that the band's goal was to stop releasing albums after they reached number 12. He stated that this self-imposed limit would ensure quality control so that they don't put out crap music. Too bad they aren't living up to this ideal.

I realize art is subjective, and I'm writing this as a Coldplay fan. From the first album, Parachutes, in 2000 to Mylo Xyloto in 2011, the band churned out solid records and many singles. In fact, the song Fix You is one of my top five songs of all time by any band/artist. Unfortunately, starting with the album Ghost Stories in 2014, Coldplay started going off the rails. This album has one good song, and the rest is more like a movie soundtrack than a traditional album. The last "good" album was A Head Full of Dreams in 2015.

I wanted to like Moon Music, and I kept an open mind before my first listen. But you can tell by the track listing that the album dogs it.

Maybe if I'm generous I'd give them three worthy songs on the whole album. The rest are the weird, soundtrack-type tracks that don't do anything for me. A good friend of mine is also a Coldplay fan and he agrees.

If you want to expand your creative experimentation, I say do it under a different name/brand. A prime example is the album Original Soundtracks 1, which U2 recorded under the Pseudonym Passengers.

Dare I suggest that Coldplay should stop at ten albums if they plan to continue along this path?
